Xabi Alonso Appointed as New Bayer Leverkusen Head Coach
Gerardo Seoane Departs After Poor Season Start
Former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich Star Takes Over
Bayer 04 Leverkusen has announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach. He succeeds Gerardo Seoane, who was relieved of his duties after a poor start to the season.
Alonso, a former midfielder, has a wealth of experience at the highest level. He played for Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool during his illustrious career, winning numerous trophies, including the Champions League and the Premier League.
After retiring as a player in 2017, Alonso began his coaching career with Real Madrid's youth team. He impressed there and was appointed as the manager of Real Sociedad's B team in 2019. Last season, he led Sociedad to a respectable 6th-place finish in La Liga.
Leverkusen currently sits 17th in the Bundesliga after eight matches. The club has won only one game and has drawn five, a record that has led to Seoane's departure.
Alonso will take charge of his first match as Leverkusen's head coach on September 17th when they host Hertha Berlin. The Spaniard faces a tough task as he attempts to turn Leverkusen's fortunes around and guide them up the table.
