Pulmonary and Respiratory Complications Claim Bumbling Deputy Barney Fife

Don Knotts, the beloved Emmy-winning actor best known for his portrayal of the bumbling deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show," has passed away at the age of 81. Knotts died of pulmonary and respiratory complications at UCLA Medical Center in Beverly Hills, California, on Friday, February 24, 2006.

"Knotts was a comedic genius who brought joy to millions of viewers with his unforgettable performances as Barney Fife," said Paul Ward, a spokesman for TV Land, the cable network that aired "The Andy Griffith Show" reruns. "His legacy as one of the greatest comedic actors of all time will live on forever."

Born Jesse Donald Knotts in Morgantown, West Virginia, in 1924, Knotts began his acting career in the 1950s, appearing in small roles in television and film. His breakthrough came in 1960 when he was cast as Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show." The character, a deputy with a knack for getting into trouble, became an instant hit, and Knotts earned five Emmy Awards for his portrayal.

Knotts left "The Andy Griffith Show" in 1965 to pursue a successful film career. He starred in over two dozen movies, including "The Incredible Mr. Limpet," "The Shakiest Gun in the West," and "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken." He also had starring roles in several television series, including "Three's Company," "The Don Knotts Show," and "What a Dummy."
