Early Success and the Birth of a Rivalry

The University of Arkansas Razorbacks football program has a rich and storied history. The team was founded in 1894 and has since become one of the most successful programs in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

The Razorbacks' early success was due in large part to the leadership of coach Frank Broyles. Broyles led the team to its first national championship in 1964 and nine SEC championships over a 19-year period.

The Golden Age of Arkansas Football

The 1960s and 1970s were a golden age for Arkansas football. The Razorbacks won six SEC championships during this period, including three straight from 1964 to 1966.

During this time, the Razorbacks also developed a fierce rivalry with the University of Alabama. The two teams have met on the gridiron 57 times, with Alabama holding a 31-24-2 advantage.

Recent Success and a New Era

The Razorbacks have continued to be a competitive force in the SEC in recent years. The team won the SEC Western Division championship in 2006 and has appeared in 12 bowl games since 2000.

In 2020, Sam Pittman was named the head coach of the Razorbacks. Pittman has led the team to two consecutive bowl games, including a victory in the Outback Bowl in 2022.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions Football: A Proud Tradition

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Golden Lions football program has a rich tradition of its own. The team was founded in 1929 and has competed at the NCAA Division I level since 1998.

The Golden Lions have won three Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships, including back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003.

War Memorial Stadium: A Historic Home

Both the Razorbacks and Golden Lions play their home games at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas. The stadium opened in 1948 and has a capacity of 54,124.

War Memorial Stadium has hosted numerous historic events, including the 1950 NFL Championship Game and the 1969 Sugar Bowl.
