Political Career

Menendez began his political career in the New Jersey State Legislature, where he served in the State Assembly from 1988 to 2002. He was then elected to the State Senate, where he served until 2006. In 2006, he was elected to the United States Senate, succeeding retiring Senator Jon Corzine.

Controversy and Corruption Charges

Menendez has been embroiled in several controversies and corruption charges throughout his political career. In 2006, he was accused of accepting illegal campaign contributions from a healthcare executive. He was also accused of using his position to benefit his friends and family members. In 2015, he was charged with bribery, fraud, and conspiracy.
